Hello interwebs!
This channel is all about hiking and trekking and army surplus stuff. I live in Finland and I have found that army surplus is the way to go if you want to have quality stuff. I have a lot of stuff and on this channel I make videos that hopefully help other people to make some kinds of decision on what to buy and give them some kind of opinion what they might be buying.
I try to make short videos but it seems that they all are usually quite long.
Tekemääni suomenkielistä sisältöä löytyy kanavalta Retkimies.
Some of the videos are in Finnish and the later videos are mostly in English. Usually videos that are highly regional are in Finnish.
Subscribe and share as much as you please.

Finnish M05 summer camo test - June
Setup is GoPro 5 Black on a tripod, height about 150 cm. Shooting distance from 10 - 15 metres. Shooting time was about 18:00. I kept the un-camo hood so that there was actually something to see.

Finnish M05 camouflage comes in couple of different pattern. This one is for winter gear. I believe it's called frost pattern. There is also the winter pattern and more videos about that later. Winter jacket and trousers are quite ok and hat is quite ok also.

Finnish M05 winter camo test - May

Finnish M05 frost (winter) camouflage is quite effective. I made a short video about the frost camo and how it works in finnish May. Shooting distanse is short - 10 metres at the beginning, tripod heigth is 150 cm. There is going to be a lot more camo tests on this M05. I'll do two sets for every season: spring, summer, fall and winter. Sets will include short distanse (about 10 metres) and lon...
Finnish M05 Camouflage Winter hat

Finnish military winter hat in M05 frost camouflage is cool. It's well suitable for general outdoors, keeps you warm to certain extent but it's not an arctic hat.
Finnish M05 Camouflage Winter Trousers

Finnish military winter trousers in M05 frost camouflage are relatively nice. Lack of pockets, for example, is it's downfall. Finnish defence force should seriously try to update these a little bit.
Channel update - May 2018

Time for a short update on what I am planning. I'm going to make a new channel where I post my finnish content. I'll be mostly same kind of stuff that I'm doing on this channel. As speaking finnish is a bit more convenient and easy for me, there might be a bit more vlog-kinda stuff. The new channel is called Retkimies. ua-cam.com/channels/klDUiulnkXT-PptO4IAzDw.html This channel is not going to...

YAY! I have almost 1500 subs. Therefore it makes sense to have one of these giveaway competitions! I'll be giving away my backup dutch army surplus hooped bivys as I have two of them and I don't really need the second one. I bought a pair of these haven't worn them but boy they feel spacious
A naali sometimes is spacious. Tight would be better. Wear good socks.
Stack 8 layers of cardboard and do a double handed downward thrust with the Dart... The design is meant to penetrate and boy does it! Its half the surface area of the cold steel plastic knives and twice as rigid.. A heart, liver or kidney shot would be no problem with this weapon!! But me, I'm going for the eyes, i keep one in each boot....😏
Nice show case
Bonjour is it a good item ?
It is a good item. Don't have them anymore. Found better ones but I still recommend these.
ok merci, which ones are better ?
@@patriceb26 I have exped camp booties. They have more solid sole and they are bit more easier to walk around. I have both short and long version so ones for summer and ones for winter. They are very good inside cabins and tents. Carinthias are a bit more warmer but usability is better with the expeds.
We miss you man! please buy/get more surplus and review it!
Well, if someone donates me items I am happy to review them and make more videos. Currently I don't really buy anymore any new stuff so there is nothing to review anymore.
Yeah i feel you buddy. Limited uses for the surplus and not much of it useful to the average bushcrafter. I think you have reviewed most of the common gear which we use and are likely to buy so thank you for that. Ive bought a few items based on your videos :) Lets see what the future brings buddy. @@KMHiker
@@NewbFixer The thing is that you don't need that much gear if you do hiking, camping and bushcraft. So, originally I had a very limited set of gear that I would use heavily. Then I got this youtube thing going and after making some of the original videos, I had a problem that I had to buy stuff to make new videos. Well, not really, I also wanted to try new gear but if I didn't have the youtube channel, I probably woudln't have bought any new gear. My channel was not sponsored and didn't make that much income so it's kind of a dead end. I could probably still make some videos about the gear that I currently have just to reflect on the journey - what did I keep and what did I get rid off.
@@KMHiker Sorry didnt have time until now to respond properly. I understand completely me and my friend had/have an airsoft channel and we ran into the same problem. Once we reviewed everything we had between us and could borrow we had to buy new stuff we didnt need for content lol. Its a crazy game youtube. Now that channel is abandoned and i just upload random stuff when i feel like it. Anyway i look forward to your next video if you get round to doing one if not we understand buddy. ATB :)
Hope your doing well buddy been a viewer a long time. watching your videos again years later :)
Vaihdoin omaani uudet telttakaaret #shelbyoutdoor🇫🇮
Se on hyvä juttu se.
I use a small tarp over my one man tent when i use it. Ive got no issue with using a tarp over a bivvy.
There is no actual issue there but if you buy one of these so save weight and for the small pack size, then you have a dilemma. This alone is small and light, but if you have the tarp with ropes etc, then the overall weight and pack size is going to be larger. So, if you take that setup and compare it to Hilleberg Akto or Enan, then you have a more bulkier and heavier set and that costs probably more if you get everything brand new.
Paras maastopuku.
@@KMHiker grönlannin vahaa eivät partioaitassa suositelleet kankaille, mitkä on 100% puuvillaa.
Have 2 each windproof DPM & Desert DPM smocks , no multi Cam ... yet. Prized specimens in my collection
Good that you like these. Multicam look awesome. Get one now!
Ya goretex sucks in actual rain. It is only good when it is about -7 Celsius or colder. In those cases it's awesome as it breathes better the colder it gets outside and blocks 100% of the wind allowing much thinner and more effective insulation layers without all the bulk. It allows you to stay relatively little bulk to about -20 Celsius. It's funny goretex is only awesome for the exact opposite of what it is advertised for lol. In actual rain just wear a poncho that 0.01% of the time and wear a cotton smock the other 99.99% and be comfortable
At one point I was about to make a video how goretex is mostly a scam - if we are just talking about the goretex part. So, basically, goretex lets vapour out but it requires that the outer surface is not wet. If it is dry, then the vapour get out easy. But if it's dry, you don't need the membrane. If the surface is wet, then the vapour cannot get out. So, at that point, could just as well wear a regular rain coat. So, what matters is the water repellency of the outer material and that is usually gone after couple of hours of heavy rain. How I see it with goretex, you can choose - do you want to be wet from the rain or from the sweat if you are hiking or working.
Kenen valmistama takki/housut?
What poles did you use to prop up micro tent for ventilation ? I bought the micro tent because of your vid 👍
What do you mean by poles? Do you mean the arches that are used to set up the tent? If so, those come with the tent. If you mean the pegs that I use to tension the tent, then I just use ones from my Hilleberg Akto or just sticks that I find from the forest.
@KMHiker what is the pole at 5:41 in the vid, the thing that props up the cover on the top right of the video ? Thanks
@@Poopidpeople That pole is an old tent pole from an army surplus tent. I believe those are from east germany or poland originally.
I have a pair of M58 from the early 1990s and they are the best boots i have ever Owned.
I found you within 2 seconds every time. The black beanie gave it away
You are supposed to look around the beanie...
Nää on ihan puhdasveriset Jalaksen kakkoslaatuset M05. Nykyään tätä mallia M05:a saa edes ostettua ja kenkä muutenkin näyttää vähän erilaiselle.
thanks for the review from Ukraine
Thanks for the thanks
Old video, but what size are you wearing?
XL
To stop rain getting in, just turn it over so the opening is at bottom, rain just rolls off.
That is true.
I put my inflatable sleeping mattress inside too
Are these insulated?
Yes they are. They have a very thin insulation. They are over trousers so the yare supposed to be worn over everything else. If you compare these to ECWCS L7, these suck big time. These do not let the moisture out because of the structure (having a plastic membrane).
Hello mi friend, how's you doing mi friend 👍😃🇬🇧
Thank you for the thorough review, based on real outdoor experience (and not just opening the box). I appreciate your sense of humour and understatements 🙂
Amazing to see

Total rubbish as was your so called test...
One word, Buffalo.
Itsellä X7 aina retkellä mukana, toimii!
The worst way to check if your axe is sharp is the "Let's see if it cuts my hand" test.
Multifuel. Trangia tekee hyvät kattilat. Primus tekee hyvät keittimet.
Bad purchase. It takes the non-stick coating off the axe head. 4.27s. Yours too!
Nice magnesium tennis rackets my friend! The best part of the joke was when you said LOL Instead of laughing. I am in the states got a pair of these about a month ago fortunately had a discount code after shipping which was quite high due to the size of these paid about $40 came with the bindings. Typically they sell here in the states for a bit more than $60 US. Great video thanks for the info and your experience prior to using them. They should hold your weight even with the heavy rucksack. The magnesium can also be shaved off and used as a fire starter.
I have one of these. I love the ergonomics of the pockets and I also find the zipper finicky .. Ive learned that pressing down on them as I move the zipper for either direction helps them glide better.. You picked a great background to make your video. Really exemplifies why Finland went to M05 camo..
Minkä kokoinen tuo puku on?
Am I to assume these are the actual Finnish MOD issue version? They seem like they may be a bit more practical then the version put out by VST.. But neither version are waterproof, correct?
What is VST? Don't know that term. If I recall it correctly, these are not 100% genuine army issue trousers but based on the same materials and patterns bought from the private sector. Should be identical to the army issue ones. Determine waterproof. These are waterproof enough to stand in a small drizzle or rain or sit in snow for a while. But are not rain gear so extended exposure to the rain is not a good thing.
@@KMHiker HAHA.. VST-> Varusteleka. I abbreviated to save time. My apologies... Thank you kindly for your reply. Your reply fits into what I have gathered in regards to being waterproof vs water resistant ..Greetings from Alaska..
